The 67th edition of the Grammy Awards held at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles United States on Sunday. Trevor Noah was again on hand to take on the hosting duties. It marked his fifth successive hosting sting on the annual bash.
The Grammy Premiere Ceremony opened with a powerful performance of Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” set against images of the Los Angeles-area wildfires.
The highlight of the event for Nigerians was internationally renowned Afrobeats singer Temilade Openiyi better known as Tems making a big win at the award ceremony.
Tems, a Grammy winner and now an eight-time nominee, was up for three awards this year. Her song “Love Me JeJe” nominated for Best African Music Performance, “Burning” for Best R&B Song, and her debut album “Born in the Wild” competing for Best Global Music Album.
She clinched the award with her song ‘Love Me JeJe’, beating ‘Tomorrow’ by Yemi Alade, ‘MMS’ by Asake featuring Wizkid, ‘Sensational’ by Chris Brown featuring Davido and ‘Lojay and Higher’ by Burna Boy.
Tems faced strong competition from fellow Nigerian artistes, including Burna Boy, Asake, and Wizkid for their collaboration MMS, as well as Yemi Alade and Davido, who featured alongside Lojay on Chris Brown’s Sensational.
At the 67th Award ceremony, Tems was announced as the winner of Best African Music Performance for her incredible single, “Love Me Jeje,” cementing her status as the Nigerian-based act with the most Grammy Awards in history.
This marked her second Grammy, following her joint win for Best Melodic Rap Performance at the 65th edition for her contribution to Future‘s “Wait For You.”
With this victory, Tems set multiple new records for the Nigerian music industry: she became the first Nigerian artist to win Best African Music Performance, the first Nigerian female artist to win the category, the most-awarded Nigerian-based artist in Grammys history, and the first female Nigerian-based artist to hold two Grammy awards.
In her heartfelt acceptance speech, Tems said:
Dear God, thank you so much for putting me on this stage and bringing me this team. Tomorrow is my mum’s birthday, and this is her first Grammy’s, and I just want to thank you, mum, because she’s really done a lot for me and my brother. I want to thank my team, thank you so much. To God be the glory because honestly, he’s changed my life so much. Thank you so much, thank you God.
Davido congratulated his colleague, Tems on bagging the award, also extending his felications to his American colleague, Chris Brown whose 11th album, “11:11 (Deluxe),” was crowned Best R&B Album at the event.
Taking to his X page, Davido wrote …

Since her debut in 2019, Tems has amassed two Grammy Awards, four NAACP Image Awards, four BET Awards, five Headies Awards, two American Music Awards, two Soul Train Music Awards, one BET Hip-Hop Award, one iHeartRadio Music Award, a Billboard Women in Music Breakthrough Award, and an Oscar nomination.
