Nigeria’s 2027 election preparations have entered another important phase after the Independent National Electoral Commission published updated candidate lists for several upcoming elections.
The commission’s latest publications cover presidential, senatorial, National Assembly and governorship contests, alongside other election information on its official platform.
The updates follow INEC’s review of complaints submitted by political parties and candidates over omissions, disputed nominations and the inclusion of individuals whose names were not contained in the membership registers submitted by their parties.
In its review of governorship and State House of Assembly complaints, INEC said 66 petitions succeeded out of 130 received.
The commission also confirmed that former Communications Minister Isa Ali Pantami’s petition was successful, although his inclusion remains subject to the outcome of pending court cases. Former Ogun governorship candidate Ladi Adebutu’s request was unsuccessful at this stage.
The developments show how legal disputes and internal party disagreements continue to shape the road to the next elections.
For political parties, the updated lists are important because they help clarify who is currently recognised by INEC as a candidate. For voters, they offer an opportunity to follow the changing political landscape before campaigns gather even more momentum.
With the election timetable already in motion, further legal challenges and candidate-related disputes may still emerge.
