Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, and the leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have expressed support for Cardinal John Onaiyekan and the Catholic Bishops, urging greater respect for religious leaders and institutions amid ongoing political discussions ahead of the 2027 general elections. The two political figures emphasised the importance of preserving the dignity of religious organisations, noting that faith leaders have consistently contributed to national peace, moral guidance, humanitarian services, education, and social development. They argued that political disagreements should not be allowed to undermine the role of religious institutions in promoting unity and national cohesion. According to them, democratic engagement should be rooted in mutual respect, constructive dialogue, and adherence to constitutional freedoms, including freedom of religion and expression. Obi and Kwankwaso also encouraged political actors to concentrate on presenting practical solutions to Nigeria’s pressing challenges, including economic recovery, insecurity, unemployment, healthcare, education, and infrastructure development, rather than engaging in divisive rhetoric. Political analysts observed that religious leaders remain influential voices in Nigeria’s public affairs, often advocating for justice, accountability, peaceful coexistence, and good governance. They noted that maintaining cordial relationships between political leaders and religious institutions is important for strengthening public confidence and fostering national stability. Civil society organisations also urged political parties and candidates to conduct campaigns based on policies and ideas rather than statements capable of inflaming religious or ethnic sensitivities. They emphasised that issue-based politics, respect for democratic institutions, and peaceful engagement are essential to credible elections and national progress. Observers further stressed that collaboration among government, faith-based organisations, civil society, and citizens can contribute significantly to addressing the country’s social and economic challenges.
