Egypt, who are seven-time African Champions had gone into the game as favourite to go through but were stunned by a resilient DR Congo team, who took the lead in the 37th minute through Meschack Elia’s header before Mostafa Mohamed leveled things from the spot nine minutes later.
The scoreline would remain at a 1-1 stalemate even after extra time, taking the game into penalty shootouts.

Both nations kept at it till DR Congo’s keeper, Lionel Mpasi converted the 18th penalty (Dr Congo’s eighth) of the pulsating shootout to send Leopards to the Quarterfinals and condemn an Egyptian side who have been rather underwhelming at the tournament to elimination.
The only thing better than a winning penalty is a winning penalty scored by a goalkeeper. 😏🇨🇩#TotalEnergiesAFCON2023 pic.twitter.com/pUqbBN12Xr
