Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi resigned on Wednesday to President Droupadi Murmu, after his cabinet’s recommendation to dissolve the Lok Sabha, the lower chamber of parliament.
Murmu accepted Modi’s and the council of ministers’ resignations, requesting that Modi serve as prime minister until a new government is formed, according to a President’s House official.
Modi’s resignation was part of the procedure for forming the next administration in the country. Modi is expected to take oath as the Prime Minister for the third time on June 8 with the help of the coalition partners of the National Democratic Alliance,
The Election Commission of India issued official data on its website early Wednesday, indicating that the ruling National Democratic Alliance, led by Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party, will form the next administration.
According to sources, the Union cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed on Wednesday that the 17th Lok Sabha be dissolved.
Following the meeting at his residence, a day after the general election results, Modi made the formal recommendation to President Droupadi Murmu and handed over his resignation, according to reports.
“The Union cabinet has recommended the dissolution of the 17th Lok Sabha,” a top source told PTI.
According to sources, the election results were discussed during the cabinet meeting, which was followed by a council of ministers discussion. The current 17th Lok Sabha’s term will finish on June 16.
The BJP alone won 240 seats, giving the NDA a commanding majority in the 543-member House, while the main opposition party, Congress, won 99 seats.
