President Bola Tinubu has received congratulations from Dr. Doyin Okupe, a former director-general of the Labour Party (LP) Presidential Campaign Council, on his reelection as the head of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
In a congratulatory message on Monday Okupe, a former presidential spokesperson, said: “I congratulate President Bola Tinubu on his re-election as the leader of ECOWAS.
Recall that on Sunday, at the bloc’s 65th Ordinary Session in Abuja, President Tinubu was re-elected.
“It is difficult for me to understand why it is the destiny of President Tinubu to come into position of leadership, both at national and regional levels, at periods of hardship and difficulty.
“But I pray for divine guidance and wisdom to navigate these turbulent waters.”
He contends that the primary goal of Tinubu’s upcoming term should be to return Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger’s leadership to the ECOWAS.
Reconciling with the Republic of Niger, Nigeria’s close neighbours, would be the first step, he suggested. Okupe suggested that Tinubu rely on the backing of former President Muhammadu Buhari as well as other powerful Northern figures with close relations to the Republic of Niger.
“The Africa Union as a body can be made to officially spearhead this reconcilatory agenda while a diplomatic outreach to Russia for this purpose, especially if handled at the level of the AU, will certainly be helpful,” he noted.
