It is a victory for Princess Mojisola Meranda as a vote of confidence has been passed on to her as the speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly during the plenary today.
The motion was moved by the lawmaker representing Oshodi/Isolo 2, Oladipo Ajomale, and seconded by Aro Moshood, on the grounds the speaker was duly elected by the house and is fit for the job. 34 lawmakers are strongly behind the speaker
The vote follows the recent controversy that arose after her emergency on January 12, 2025, following the impeachment of Mudashir Obasa who was alledged of multiple frauds. The position has brought so much tussle since his impeachment. Upon election, she became the first female speaker of the house which gathered much acceptance.
Despite the invasion of the Assembly Premise by the Department of State Services (DSS) earlier today, sealing off the Speaker’s office in an unprecedented move which has been condemned by the lawmakers, members of the Lagos State House of Assembly conveyed in the Assembly chamber, and passed a vote of confidence on the Speaker, other staff of the Assembly also showed their solidarity support for the Speaker.
The move by the security operatives has sparked reactions, the former Minister of Communications, Major General Tajudeen Olanrewaju (retd), described the action of the security operatives as an abuse of power.
He insisted that the rule of law must prevail in the ongoing tussle for the speakership position. He said, “Lagos State indigenes must stand up together and defend their state heritage,” Olanrewaju said. “Our political institutions have evolved over the decades—we cannot return to the dark past.”
“In contemporary developing countries, including Nigeria, one of the greatest political deficits lies in the relative weakness of the rule of law. Effective legal institutions are perhaps the most difficult to construct or sustain,” he said.
