The supreme court judgement has continued to unfold more crisis in Rivers state as the two fractions are still at loggerheads.
Since the judgement that recognized the speaker, Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule led Assembly, there has been loggerheads. Earlier, the 27 lawmakers who are loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike had upon resumption gave the governor a 48-hour ultimatum to re-present the 2025 budget.
As a way of establishing a relationship with the lawmakers the Governor had invited them to a meeting on Monday. It was gathered that some members of the State House of Assembly have turned down an invitation.
Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC), have asked Governor Siminalayi Fubara to resign or face impeachment.
In a bid to curtail the crisis in the state, a former Governor of Rivers State, on Monday Chief Rufus Ada George, has called on all warring parties to sheathe their swords and embrace peace and stability in the state.
He said, “I remind our political gladiators of the rich history and remarkable progress we have made over the years. It appears we are drifting into troubled waters, but we must aim for peaceful coexistence and greater development,” he stated.
“Peace must be our utmost priority. I call on all parties to immediately stop all threats, inflammatory statements, and ultimatums. We must exercise caution to avoid escalating the already tense situation,” he warned.
“The impact of these political tensions is being felt on the streets. We must adopt a spirit of compromise, as history has shown that even war-torn regions have found peace through negotiation,” he noted.
“This is the time to come together as one, united people, for the sake of peace and prosperity. As the oldest civilian governor of Rivers State, I remain optimistic about the future and urge all stakeholders to join me in working towards a brighter and more prosperous tomorrow,” he pleaded.
With their moves and attics more drama may continue to unfold in Rivers State.
