In a renewed show of commitment to healthcare development, former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has made a ₦10 million donation to the Aguata Anglican Diocese to support the revitalization of the Good Hope Specialist Hospital in Isulo, Anambra State. The initiative reflects his long-standing dedication to improving healthcare delivery and community welfare across Nigeria.
The funds are earmarked for the acquisition, rehabilitation, and transformation of the hospital into a fully functional health complex capable of providing essential medical services to residents of Isulo and its neighboring communities. The project is expected to breathe new life into a facility that has struggled for years due to inadequate infrastructure and limited resources.
Speaking at the event, Obi explained that his inspiration for this gesture stemmed from a similar initiative he supported in Amichi. Years ago, he contributed to the establishment of a health and educational project under the Diocese of Amichi, which has since grown into one of Nigeria’s leading schools of nursing. The success of that institution, he said, encouraged him to extend the same vision to Isulo, with hopes that the Good Hope Specialist Hospital will evolve into a beacon of hope and a hub of quality healthcare services.
“Health remains the foundation of productivity and human development,” Obi emphasized. “Without access to proper healthcare, communities cannot thrive, and individuals cannot contribute meaningfully to national growth. This donation is my way of supporting a system that touches every family and every household.”
The former governor of Anambra State also addressed questions about the timing of the donation, stressing that his action was not politically motivated. He dismissed suggestions that it was connected to his political ambitions or future plans, reiterating that he has consistently supported projects aimed at improving lives regardless of political considerations.
“This gesture is purely out of my volition. I have always believed in and supported good causes willingly. It has nothing to do with politics. My focus remains on improving healthcare, education, and human capital development because these are the true drivers of progress in any society,” Obi explained.
The ₦10 million donation represents only the first installment of what he pledged would be a continuous effort. He assured the Diocese and the community that further support would follow, aimed not only at equipping the hospital but also at ensuring its long-term sustainability. Obi’s broader vision is to uplift healthcare and education across Nigeria, sectors he has consistently described as the bedrock of national development.
Community members and church leaders have lauded Obi’s intervention, noting that the hospital has long been in need of revitalization. They expressed optimism that with his support, Good Hope Specialist Hospital would soon become a reliable center for medical care, reducing the burden on residents who often travel long distances to access healthcare services.
Obi’s commitment to social investment is not new. Over the years, he has contributed to numerous causes, ranging from the construction of schools and hospitals to the provision of scholarships and educational materials. Recently, he also made headlines for offering a scholarship to a teenager who went viral after being released from detention, underscoring his consistent dedication to empowering individuals and communities through practical support.
Healthcare experts and social commentators argue that Obi’s latest gesture is a call to action for other leaders and well-meaning Nigerians to invest in the health sector. With Nigeria facing persistent challenges such as inadequate medical facilities, shortage of personnel, and high maternal and infant mortality rates, interventions like this, they say, are critical to bridging gaps and improving outcomes.
For Obi, however, the project goes beyond mere philanthropy. It aligns with his belief that building strong institutions in health and education is the surest way to prepare Nigeria for sustainable development. By reviving the Good Hope Specialist Hospital, he hopes to leave behind a legacy of improved access to healthcare for generations to come.
As the first phase of the hospital’s rehabilitation gets underway, residents of Isulo and surrounding towns are watching with optimism. If Obi’s track record in Amichi is anything to go by, the Good Hope Specialist Hospital may soon become another success story—an institution that not only treats illnesses but also restores hope and dignity to an entire community.
