Vice President Kashim Shettima returned to Abuja after representing President Bola Tinubu at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York and holding subsequent strategic engagements in Germany.
In New York, Shettima’s engagements included:
- Delivering Nigeria’s National Statement: He called for comprehensive UN reforms, including the push for a permanent African seat on the Security Council.
- Championing African Sovereignty: He advocated for Africa’s control over its estimated $700 billion mineral resources and global equity in resource governance.
- Securing Commendation: He met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who commended Nigeria’s bid for a permanent Security Council seat.
- Attracting Investment: He showcased Nigeria’s $200 billion energy transition opportunity to global investors.
- Strengthening Partnerships: He engaged with international stakeholders, including the United Kingdom and the Gates Foundation, on areas like trade, defense, migration, healthcare, and education.
- Engaging Diaspora: He assured the Nigerian diaspora community of robust engagement in the Tinubu administration’s policies.
Meetings in Germany
After UNGA, the Vice President proceeded to Germany for strategic meetings, notably with officials of Deutsche Bank, to explore areas of intervention and partnership in Nigeria’s developmental initiatives.
