ADC faults Nigerian govt for linking insecurity to Trump’s remarks

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised the Federal Government for attributing recent waves of violence in Kebbi and Kwara States to comments made by U.S. President Donald Trump.

On Wednesday, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, claimed that Trump’s recent statements on Nigeria’s security situation had emboldened violent groups.

Responding in a statement on Thursday, ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, described Akume’s remarks as an attempt to deflect responsibility. He said it was “appalling” that the APC-led government would suggest that insecurity in Nigeria was triggered by a foreign leader’s comments.

Abdullahi argued that the claim amounted to a “shameful abdication of responsibility” and underscored the Tinubu administration’s inability to contain the worsening crisis. He noted that Nigerians have endured massacres, mass abductions, and attacks on schools and places of worship for years under the APC government, adding that the situation has deteriorated further due to indecisive leadership.

“It is therefore disingenuous to blame one tweet for the state of insecurity in Nigeria,” Abdullahi said. “Those killing Nigerians did not need to be instigated by Trump; they were already actively encouraged by a government that consistently fails to act decisively to stop the carnage.”

He accused the administration of focusing on political victories while the country “is turned into a killing field,” insisting that the government must take responsibility for its failure to protect citizens.
