Don Jazzy Says Afrobeats Is Still a Baby Genre

Mavin Records boss Don Jazzy has stirred conversations online after describing Afrobeats as “still a baby genre” despite its global success.

Speaking during a recent interview, the legendary producer explained that while Afrobeats has achieved massive international recognition, it is still in its early developmental stage compared to older, more established genres like hip-hop, R&B, and pop.

According to him, Afrobeats only began gaining real global traction in the last decade, meaning there’s still plenty of room for growth, structure, and evolution.

He noted that the genre needs more investment, proper documentation, stronger global distribution systems, and long-term industry structures before it can be considered fully matured.

Don Jazzy’s comment has sparked reactions, with some fans agreeing that Afrobeats is young and still developing, while others argue that the genre has already achieved global dominance with stars like Burna Boy, Wizkid, Davido, Rema, Tems and more pushing boundaries.

Regardless, his statement highlights the ongoing conversation about where Afrobeats stands globally — and what the next chapter could look like.
