The Joint Revenue Board (JRB) has called on all Nigerian states to accelerate the passage of the Harmonised Taxes and Levies (Approved List for Collection) Bill, stressing its importance for uniform tax administration across the country.
The appeal was made during the board’s 158th meeting, held on December 9–10, 2025, at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, where discussions also focused on the transition of the Joint Tax Board (JTB) into the JRB.
According to the board, the proposed law will ensure consistency in the application of taxes, rates, and levies at the sub-national level, aligning with the federal government’s ongoing tax reform agenda.
“The move aims to create a more coordinated and efficient national revenue administration framework, enhance collaboration among revenue authorities, and improve tax compliance across the country,” the JRB stated.
The board emphasised the need for accurate data, improved analytics, and harmonised practices to strengthen Nigeria’s tax system. It also reaffirmed its commitment to eliminating illegal activities by non-state actors within the revenue value chain.
Specifically, the JRB urged the Office of the National Security Adviser, the Nigeria Police Force, and other security agencies to dismantle illegal roadblocks used to extort levies and charges along transport corridors.
The board further insisted on the abolition of unauthorised road stickers and similar instruments issued by both state and non-state actors, encouraging citizens to resist such practices and report offenders to security authorities for sanctions.
