The spirit of the “Abami Eda” is soaring higher than ever! In a move that has sparked widespread celebration across Nigeria and the global music community, the Recording Academy has officially announced that Fela Anikulapo-Kuti will be posthumously honored with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 ceremony.

Decades after he first shook the world with his horns and his truth, the architect of Afrobeat is finally getting his flowers on the grandest stage of all. Here’s everything you need to know about this historic milestone.

Several African artists have won Grammys in competitive categories, Fela Kuti is set to make history as the first African musician to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. This “Special Merit Award” is reserved for performers who have made creative contributions of outstanding artistic significance to the field of recording. By joining the ranks of legends like The Beatles, Aretha Franklin, and Bob Marley, Fela’s inclusion cements Afrobeat as one of the most influential genres in modern music history.

In a statement released on December 19, 2025, Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. described the 2026 honorees as an “extraordinary group whose influence spans generations, genres, and the very foundation of modern music.”

The Academy specifically praised Fela as a:

“Nigerian musician, producer, arranger, political radical, and activist who created Afrobeat in the 1960s by combining funk, jazz, salsa, calypso, and traditional Nigerian rhythms.”

They also noted that his influence continues to shape modern icons—from Beyoncé and Paul McCartney to the new generation of Afrobeats stars like Burna Boy and Wizkid.
