Nollywood continues to make waves at the box office, and actress-filmmaker Toyin Abraham is leading the charge with her latest film, Oversabi Aunty. The comedy has officially surpassed the ₦1 billion mark in Nigerian cinemas, marking a major milestone for the actress and the industry at large.
Distributed by FilmOne Entertainment, Oversabi Aunty has grossed ₦1,017,201,953 across West African cinemas, making it the first Nollywood directorial debut to hit this threshold and the fourth highest-grossing Nigerian film of all time. The film’s performance underscores both its widespread appeal and the growing strength of Nigeria’s cinema culture.
Released in December 2025, Oversabi Aunty mixes relatable humour with cultural themes. It tells the story of an overly enthusiastic church usher whose well-intentioned meddling leads to comedic chaos. Featuring a strong cast alongside Abraham, the film resonated with audiences, blending laughter with reflections on family and community — a formula that has clearly worked at the box office.
In response to this achievement, the Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Nigerian Film Corporation (NFC), publicly congratulated Toyin Abraham. NFC’s managing director, Ali Nuhu, praised the film for its cultural relevance, effective distribution strategy, and contribution to Nigeria’s creative economy. He described the success as “another strong signal of progress” for the industry.
Toyin Abraham also took to social media to express her gratitude, thanking her fans — affectionately known as “Toyintitans” — the cast and crew, and cinema-going audiences for their support.
The success of Oversabi Aunty not only highlights Abraham’s evolving influence as a filmmaker but also reflects Nollywood’s growing commercial viability. As local films continue to attract large audiences, the industry’s contribution to Nigeria’s cultural and economic landscape is becoming increasingly significant
