Former NFF President Amaju Pinnick has sparked a firestorm in the Nigerian football community. In a recent interview on Sunday Oliseh’s Global Football Insights, Pinnick boldly claimed that the Super Eagles would have secured a spot in the 2026 World Cup if he were still in charge.
WitPinnick expressed “shock” that Nigeria failed to capitalize on the expanded 48-team format, which grants Africa up to 10 slots.
“With ten African slots, Nigeria had no excuse. If I were there, definitely, Nigeria would have qualified.”
He pointed to his 2018 success, where Nigeria navigated a “Group of Death” featuring Algeria and Cameroon to qualify with two games to spare. While he admitted the Qatar 2022 failure still “haunts” him, he insists his administration had the “grit” to avoid the current disaster.h Nigeria’s qualification hopes now officially extinguished after a recent playoff loss to DR Congo, Pinnick’s comments have hit a sensitive nerve.
The debate is raging across social media. Fans are divided into two camps:
- The Pro-Pinnick Camp: Credits him for strong administrative structures, corporate sponsorships, and a more dominant presence within CAF and FIFA.
- The Critics: Quick to remind everyone of the 2022 heartbreak against Ghana and the massive debts left behind at the “Glass House.”
With back-to-back World Cup absences for the first time since 1994, the NFF is under immense pressure to overhaul the national team’s technical setup. Whether or not you agree with Pinnick, one thing is clear: the “Giant of Africa” has some serious soul-searching to do.
