“NEC Conference 2026: Vice President Shettima Chairs 2-Day Summit on National Development Plan”

Nigeria’s top economic decision-makers have gathered in Abuja for a high-stakes summit aimed at synchronizing the nation’s financial future. Vice President Kashim Shettima is currently presiding over a two-day National Economic Council (NEC) Conference, which kicked off today, February 9, 2026, at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa.

The summit, themed “Delivering Inclusive Growth and Sustainable Development: The Renewed Hope National Development Plan,” has brought together all 36 state governors, key ministers, and private sector leaders. The primary goal is to finalize the Renewed Hope National Development Plan (2026–2030), a strategic successor to the 2021–2025 plan. This new blueprint is designed to bridge the gap between current reforms and the administration’s ambitious goal of achieving a $1 trillion economy by 2030.

Key agenda items for the two-day session include:

  • Fiscal Coordination: Aligning state-level budgets with federal macroeconomic priorities to curb inflation.
  • Tax Harmonization: Preparing sub-national governments for the implementation of new tax laws to reduce the burden on small businesses.
  • Investment Mobilization: Creating a unified framework to attract foreign direct investment (FDI) into non-oil sectors like manufacturing and agriculture.
  • Infrastructure & Security: Developing “ward-based” development strategies to ensure economic growth reaches the grassroots.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is attending as the Special Guest of Honour, signaling the administration’s commitment to “cooperative federalism.” As Nigeria faces a pivot point in its economic recovery, this conference is seen as the final “alignment” phase before the 2026 budget priorities are fully deployed across all 36 states.
