Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has announced the total and permanent cancellation of the sit-at-home order in Nigeria’s South East region.
The directive brings an end to the long-running Monday sit-at-home protest that has significantly affected economic and social activities across the zone.
The announcement was conveyed through IPOB’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful, who stated that Kanu ordered the immediate suspension of the sit-at-home directive to allow residents to return to normal life.
According to the group, there is no longer any instruction for people to stay indoors on Mondays, and all forms of economic, academic and social activities should resume fully.
IPOB emphasized that schools, markets, banks, offices and transport services are free to operate without fear, warning that anyone attempting to enforce sit-at-home actions is acting against Kanu’s clear instruction.
The group added that the decision was taken in the interest of the people, especially considering the economic hardship the region has endured.
The Monday sit-at-home protest was introduced years ago as a show of solidarity with Kanu following his detention. Over time, it became a weekly occurrence, disrupting businesses, education and daily life in many parts of the South East.
