The United Kingdom has officially abolished physical visa stickers for Nigerian applicants and replaced them with a mandatory electronic visa (eVisa) system effective February 25, 2026. The new directive affects travel requirements for Nigerians planning to visit, study, work, or relocate to the UK.
Under the updated policy, successful applicants will no longer receive visa vignette stickers pasted into their passports. Instead, their immigration status will be issued digitally and linked directly to their passport details through an online UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account. Travelers will be required to present their passport at departure and arrival points, where their visa status will be verified electronically.
The development is part of the UK government’s broader immigration modernization strategy aimed at digitizing border control processes and improving efficiency. Authorities say the transition to eVisas is designed to reduce document fraud, eliminate the risk of lost or damaged visa stickers, and streamline verification procedures for airlines and border officials.
For Nigerian travelers, this means stricter emphasis on ensuring passport details match their eVisa records before travel. Any discrepancies in documentation could lead to boarding denial or delays at entry points. Applicants are also advised to regularly check their UKVI accounts to confirm their visa status prior to departure.
Travel consultants note that while the change simplifies physical documentation, it increases reliance on accurate digital records and proper pre-travel verification. Nigerians planning UK trips are therefore encouraged to familiarize themselves with the eVisa process to avoid last-minute complications.
