A 30-Year Milestone: Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde’s Directorial Debut Wows Hollywood at PAFF

Nollywood legend Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde is officially entering a new era of her illustrious career. Celebrating an incredible 30 years in the industry, the screen icon has transitioned behind the camera with her directorial debut, “Mother’s Love.” The film recently received a standing ovation and glowing reviews after screening at the prestigious Pan African Film & Arts Festival (PAFF) in Los Angeles.

The screening, which drew diaspora stars like Haitian actor Jimmy Jean-Louis, is the latest stop on a high-profile international tour that has already seen the film visit the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and the Silicon Valley African Film Festival. For Omotola, this project is deeply personal, inspired by her own experiences of loss—specifically the death of her father—and a desire to explore the often-unspoken complexities of the mother-daughter bond.

What to Expect from “Mother’s Love”:

  • The Plot: The story follows Adebisi (played by newcomer Noray Nehita), a sheltered young woman from a wealthy family who finds her voice and independence during her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year. When her discovery of the “real world” sparks a clash with her strict father, her seemingly quiet mother (played by Omotola) must step in to protect her.
  • The Themes: The film dives into heavy themes like PTSD, grief, and the stark class divide in Nigeria, famously contrasting the luxury of Banana Island with the grit of Makoko.
  • The Cast: Alongside Omotola and Noray Nehita, the film features stellar performances from Ifeanyi Kalu, Olumide Oworu, Lilian Afegbai, and Nosa Rex.

The wait for Nigerian fans is almost over! “Mother’s Love” is set for a grand premiere in Lagos on March 1, 2026, followed by a nationwide theatrical release on March 6, 2026. With global distribution already in place, the film is poised to be one of the most significant African cinematic releases of the year.
