In a significant step toward accountability, the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has officially suspended three medical doctors following an investigation into the death of Nkanu Adichie-Esege, the 21-month-old son of world-renowned author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Dr. Ivara Esege.
The MDCN’s Investigative Panel, during its 25th session in Abuja (February 17–18, 2026), established a prima facie case of medical negligence and professional misconduct. The suspended practitioners include:
- Dr. Tosin Majekodunmi (Medical Director, Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital)
- Dr. Titus Ogundare (Anaesthesiologist, Euracare)
- Dr. Atinuke Uwajeh (Chief Medical Director, Atlantis Paediatric Hospital)
The tragic incident occurred on January 7, 2026, after Nkanu was referred to Euracare for diagnostic procedures—including an MRI and central line insertion—ahead of a planned emergency medical evacuation to the U.S. The Adichie family alleged gross negligence, specifically citing the improper administration of propofol (sedation), a failure to provide supplemental oxygen, and a lack of adequate monitoring that led to the child suffering cardiac arrest.
The MDCN has referred the case to the Medical and Dental Practitioners’ Disciplinary Tribunal for a formal hearing. Additionally, 10 other practitioners from Atlantis Paediatric Hospital have been cited for professional misconduct. While Euracare has denied wrongdoing, asserting they followed protocols, a coroner’s inquest at the Yaba Magistrate Court is scheduled to begin on April 14, 2026, to further establish the circumstances of the toddler’s death.
