Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, officially begins its campaign today, Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup Qualifying Tournament. The seven-time African champions are set to face Colombia in their opening game at the Astroballe arena in Villeurbanne, France, with tip-off scheduled for 2:00 PM local time.
Although Nigeria has already secured an automatic spot for the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup in Berlin—thanks to their dominant victory at the Women’s AfroBasket 2025—this tournament is far from a mere formality. Head Coach Rena Wakama views the five-game series as a critical “test of intensity” and a chance to refine the team’s tactical evolution.
The squad features a potent mix of veteran leadership and fresh energy, led by team captain Amy Okonkwo and standout guards Ezinne Kalu and Promise Amukamara.
“Our preparations have been intense, and this tournament in Lyon is an important part of that process,” Wakama noted. “The players have shown great commitment and hunger. We are focusing on faster transitions and stronger defensive communication.”
Today’s matchup is historic, marking the first time Nigeria and Colombia have ever met in women’s basketball. While the South American side is making its debut in this qualifying format, they have recently surged into the top 20 of the FIBA global rankings, signaling they are an opponent not to be underrated.
Following today’s clash, D’Tigress will face a demanding schedule with games against South Korea (March 12), the Philippines (March 14), hosts France (March 15), and Germany (March 17).
