FG Declares Friday and Monday as Public Holidays

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Friday, April 3, and Monday, April 6, 2026, as public holidays to commemorate this year’s Easter celebrations.

The announcement was made on behalf of the government by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement released on Wednesday in Abuja. The declaration, signed by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, marks Good Friday and Easter Monday respectively.

In his message to the nation, the Minister congratulated Christians both in Nigeria and the diaspora. He urged citizens to use the period to reflect on and “imbibe the virtues of selflessness, forgiveness, forbearance, and love,” citing these as the core teachings of Jesus Christ. Dr. Tunji-Ojo also emphasized that the government remains committed to its goal of “national rebirth, economic growth, and shared prosperity,” while calling for continued unity and tolerance across the country.
