The family of late Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti gathered today, Sunday, April 5, 2026, to honor his lifelong friend, Busura “Bush” Alebiosu, on the occasion of his 90th birthday.
The celebration highlighted a bond that many have described as a “rare masterclass in loyalty,” spanning over six decades and surviving the many turbulent chapters of Fela’s life and the Kalakuta Republic.
“Bush of Africa”: A Tale of Two Contrasts
The friendship between Fela and Alebiosu began in London during the late 1950s, where Fela affectionately nicknamed him “Bush of Africa”—a nod to his grounded and unassuming personality.
- The Disciplined vs. The Free Spirit: Family members recounted how the two were polar opposites. While Fela was known for his flamboyant, free-spirited, and often financially impulsive nature, “Uncle Bush” was recognized as the disciplined, financially cautious anchor of the circle.
- The Kalakuta Connection: Despite their different lifestyles, Alebiosu remained a constant fixture in Fela’s life, from the early highlife days of Koola Lobitos to the height of the Afrobeat struggle.
The Family’s Tribute
Fela’s daughter, Yeni Anikulapo-Kuti, led the tributes on behalf of the Kuti clan, expressing deep gratitude for Alebiosu’s unwavering support even long after Fela’s passing in 1997.
“Uncle Bush, e se gan, mo dupe on behalf of the family. Thank you so much. I love you, and I wish you many more years,” Yeni shared in a heartfelt message.
Beyond Music: A Political Legacy
Outside of his connection to Fela, Otunba Busura Alebiosu is a formidable figure in his own right:
- Political Stalwart: He is a founding member of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), the influential body that advises the Governor of Lagos State.
- Legislative History: He served as a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly during the Second Republic (1979–1983) and was a close ally of the legendary Governor Lateef Jakande.
