NCAA Investigates Aircraft’s Unauthorized Deviation from Flight Path

An emergency situation was narrowly averted recently when a commercial aircraft operating a domestic flight in Nigeria attempted an unauthorized and unscheduled route change, causing a significant flight scare for passengers and crew.

According to a report by The Punch, the incident involved a flight originally scheduled to travel between two major Nigerian cities. Shortly after takeoff, the pilots reportedly deviated from the flight path approved by Air Traffic Control (ATC) without prior clearance, leading to a tense standoff between the cockpit and ground controllers.

Key highlights of the incident include:

  • The Deviation: Radar tracking showed the aircraft turning toward a different destination than the one filed in its flight plan. ATC immediately intervened to query the sudden change in coordinates.
  • Passenger Panic: Reports from inside the cabin suggest that passengers became aware of the change when the flight duration exceeded expectations and the landscape below did not match the intended route. This led to visible distress and anxiety among those on board.
  • ATC Intervention: Air traffic controllers at the destination and the departure point worked in tandem to redirect the aircraft back to its safe corridor, preventing potential mid-air proximity issues with other scheduled flights.
  • Technical vs. Human Error: Preliminary investigations are looking into whether the deviation was caused by a glitch in the Flight Management System (FMS) or a “miscommunication” within the cockpit.

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has launched a full-scale investigation into the breach of safety protocols, and the flight crew has been temporarily grounded pending the outcome of the inquiry.
