The African Democratic Congress (ADC) National Convention, which took place on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, was marked by high drama as the party’s leadership announced the expulsion of several key members for “anti-party activities” and “orchestrated sabotage.”
The convention, held at the Rainbow Event Centre in Garki, Abuja, proceeded despite a last-minute attempt to block the venue and ongoing legal battles at the Supreme Court regarding the party’s leadership.
The Expulsions: A “Third Force” Purge
The convention, presided over by National Chairman David Mark and National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola, ratified the expulsion of high-ranking members accused of working with external forces to destabilize the party:
- Nafiu Bala Gombe: The leader of a rival faction that has been challenging David Mark’s leadership was officially expelled, along with several members of his “caretaker” committee.
- Ahmed Tijjani Mustapha: The former Deputy Chairman (Kaduna State) and eight other top officials were also removed, following earlier allegations of gross misconduct.
- The “Sabotage” Allegation: In a heated address, National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi alleged that the expelled members were acting as “moles” for the ruling APC to prevent the ADC from emerging as a viable alternative for the 2027 elections.
The Venue Siege
The convention itself was a feat of defiance. On Monday night, the owner of the Rainbow Event Centre reportedly attempted to withdraw permission for the event, citing “pressure from the FCDA and the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike.”
- Defiance: The ADC leadership refused to move, stating they had a signed contract. The convention eventually held under heavy security provided by the Nigeria Police and civil defence corps to prevent a forceful takeover by rival factions.
- Wike’s Rebuttal: The FCT Minister’s office has dismissed the claims of interference as “cheap blackmail,” challenging the party to provide proof of the alleged threats.
Ratification of New Heavyweights
Amidst the purges, the convention served to consolidate the party’s new identity as the “rescue platform” for Nigerian technocrats:
- Hayatu-Deen’s Integration: The convention officially welcomed former PDP presidential aspirant Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, who was tasked with leading the party’s new economic blueprint.
- Celebrity Endorsement: Actor Zubby Michael was a prominent figure at the event, using his platform to rally youth delegates ahead of his own 2027 legislative bid.
