The announcement was made on Friday, April 24, 2026, following Nwoye’s unanimous selection by the Senate Minority Caucus earlier this week.

Senator Nwoye, who represents Anambra North Senatorial District, steps into the role following a wave of high-profile defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC):
- The Vacancy: The position became vacant after the former Minority Whip, Senator Osita Ngwu (Enugu West), defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC, citing a desire to align with the leadership of President Bola Tinubu and Governor Peter Mbah.
- Nwoye’s Path: Originally elected under the Labour Party (LP) in 2023, Nwoye defected to the ADC in late 2025. His elevation marks a significant milestone for the ADC, which now holds a key leadership position in the 10th Senate.
