Popular Moro Bridge Collapses Under Weight of Heavy-Duty Truck

A critical transport link in Kwara State has been severed today, Thursday, April 30, 2026, following the collapse of the popular Moro Bridge.

The structure, which serves as a vital corridor on the Ilorin–Igbeti Federal Highway, caved in during the early hours of the morning, completely grounding vehicular and pedestrian movement between Kwara and northern Oyo State.

The Incident: Heavy-Duty Truck Overload

According to a statement from the Kwara State Ministry of Works, the collapse occurred overnight/early this morning:

  • The Cause: The bridge reportedly gave way under the weight of a heavy-duty truck carrying a heavy load. Visuals from the scene show a trailer overturned and somersaulted beneath the wreckage of the collapsed structure.
  • The Location: The incident happened in the Asa Local Government Area, specifically near the Oko Olowo area of Ilorin. This route is a primary artery for transporting agricultural goods and services between Ilorin and Oyo towns like Igbeti and Saki.

Impact on Commuters

The collapse has caused immediate chaos for travelers and businesses:

  • Stranded Travelers: Hundreds of commuters are currently stranded on both sides of the bridge, with many forced to seek alternative, much longer routes to reach their destinations.
  • Economic Disruption: As a critical link for “Kwara North” and Oyo North, the bridge’s failure has halted the movement of essential goods, leading to immediate concerns over rising transportation costs for food items and fuel.

Government Response

The Kwara State Government, through the Press Secretary of the Ministry of Works, Olajide Moyo Abolarin, confirmed the development and stated that the government has already initiated an assessment:

  • Alternative Routes: Motorists are advised to avoid the Ilorin-Igbeti axis for now. Those traveling toward Oyo North or Kwara North are encouraged to use alternative roads while technical teams evaluate the possibility of a temporary bypass.
  • Federal Intervention: Since the bridge is on a federal highway, the state is reportedly in communication with the Federal Ministry of Works for urgent reconstruction.
