FIFA President Gianni Infantino has reaffirmed that Iran will play its 2026 World Cup group stage matches in the United States, despite rising diplomatic tensions and a reported request from Tehran to move their fixtures to Mexico.
Speaking at the 76th FIFA Congress in Vancouver on Thursday, April 30, 2026, Infantino addressed the “geopolitical sensitivities” head-on, insisting that the tournament must remain a platform for global unity.
The “Unity” Stance
Infantino’s confirmation comes amid a complicated backdrop involving U.S. sanctions and a recent military conflict in the region.
- The Mandate: “Of course Iran will be participating… and of course Iran will play in the United States of America,” Infantino stated. “The reason for that is very simple: we have to unite. It is my responsibility.”
- Rejection of Alternative Venues: FIFA officially rejected a proposal to relocate Iran’s games to Mexico, maintaining that the original schedule—which places Iran in Group G alongside Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand—will stand.
- Trump’s Approval: Interestingly, U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly told reporters he was “okay” with Iran playing on U.S. soil, noting that if Infantino says they should play, “let them play.”
The Visa & Logistics Crisis
While the players are expected to be cleared for travel, the “administrative” side of the Iranian delegation has faced major hurdles:
- The Vancouver Snub: Iran was the only one of 211 member associations absent from the Congress in Vancouver this week. The Iranian delegation, including federation president Mehdi Taj, reportedly turned back at the Canadian border after their visas were revoked due to alleged ties to the IRGC.
- U.S. Entry Restrictions: U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio clarified that while players have no objections, individuals with ties to designated terrorist organizations will not be granted entry, potentially leaving the team without key administrative support during the tournament.
- Security Concerns: Matches in Los Angeles (which has a massive Iranian diaspora) are already seeing increased security budgets as organizers prepare for potential protests and high-stakes atmospheres.
