Following the recent suspension of their industrial action, the Joint Action Committee (JAC)—comprising the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU)—has officially resumed negotiations with the Federal Government. According to a report by Leadership, this move aims to permanently resolve the long-standing disputes over withheld salaries and improved working conditions for non-teaching staff across Nigerian universities.
The unions had previously paralyzed activities on campuses nationwide to protest the non-payment of four months’ withheld salaries, a grievance dating back to the 2022 strike period. While the government recently began the disbursement of part of these arrears, the unions have insisted that the current talks must address the full implementation of the 2009 Agreement, the upward review of the minimum wage for university staff, and the adequate funding of state-owned institutions. The atmosphere of the renewed dialogue is described as “cautiously optimistic,” with both parties seeking to avoid another round of disruptions to the academic calendar.
Key Objectives of the Renewed Dialogue
- Residual Arrears: Ensuring the total settlement of all outstanding withheld salaries beyond the initial payments made.
- Infrastructure & Funding: Discussions on the release of revitalization funds for public universities to enhance the working environment.
- Renegotiation of 2009 Agreements: Updating the terms of service to reflect current economic realities and inflation rates.
- Union Synergy: Maintaining the unified front between NASU and SSANU to ensure that the interests of all non-teaching cadres are adequately represented.
