The Lagos State Government has announced plans to launch its own state-issued driver’s licence in a groundbreaking collaboration with the Federal Government. The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, on Monday, May 11, 2026, during the annual ministerial press briefing at Alausa, Ikeja, marking the seventh year of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration.
This new licensing scheme is designed to coexist with the existing federal licence issued by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC). Motorists in Lagos will soon have the option to choose between the federal version or the new state-owned licence. The primary goal of the initiative is to streamline the application process, eliminate the chronic delays often associated with renewals, and enhance the state’s capacity for traffic regulation and digital surveillance.
Key Details of the Initiative
- Dual-System Option: The state licence will not replace the federal one; instead, it offers a secondary choice for residents to ensure faster service delivery.
- Enhanced Safety: The project aims to improve road safety and “sanity” by integrating more closely with Lagos State’s intelligent traffic management systems.
- Processing Power: During the briefing, it was revealed that the state has already processed 56,876 driver’s licences (fresh and renewals) through the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA) in the current review period.
- Broader Transport Updates: Alongside the licence news, the Commissioner provided updates on the Lagos Green Line, a 68-km rail project connecting Marina to the Lekki Free Trade Zone, and confirmed that the second phase of the Blue Line will be fully operational by Q1 2027.
