AMVCA 2026: Kanayo O. Kanayo, Sola Sobowale Clinch Prestigious Industry Merit Awards

Nollywood legends Kanayo O. Kanayo and Sola Sobowale have been officially honored with the prestigious Industry Merit Award (often recognized as the Lifetime Achievement honor) at the 12th Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA 2026).

The announcement, celebrated during the main awards gala in Lagos, honored both veterans for their monumental, decades-long contributions to African cinema. While the legendary Idowu Philips (Mama Rainbow) previously received this highest honor at the 10th edition in 2024, the 2026 spotlight fully belonged to Kanayo and Sobowale, cementing their status as absolute pillars of the industry.

Key Highlights of the Achievement

  • The King of Boys Reigns: Sola Sobowale, widely revered for her explosive and emotionally gripping screen presence across generations of cinema, shared the night’s highest honor.
  • A Powerful Acceptance Speech: Upon receiving his plaque, Kanayo O. Kanayo used his platform to deliver a poignant acceptance speech, strongly condemning recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa and calling for African unity through the power of storytelling.
  • Double Celebration: Beyond his lifetime merit award, Kanayo was also nominated in the highly competitive Best Lead Actor category for his exceptional performance in “Grandpa Must Obey,” proving he remains as active and relevant as ever.
