Solidarity Over Celebration: Oyo Assembly Cancels 3rd Anniversary Event Due to Rising Insecurity

The Oyo State House of Assembly has cancelled all elaborate public activities and festivities lined up to mark the third anniversary of the 10th Assembly. The legislature cited a stark rise in regional security challenges, specifically highlighting the recent wave of kidnappings and mass abductions plaguing the Oke-Ogun and Ogbomoso axis.

The 10th Assembly, which was originally inaugurated on June 14, 2023, would traditionally mark the milestone with high-profile public engagements and celebratory events. However, speaking at a plenary session, the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, made it clear that proceeding with a celebration while local communities are in active mourning and distress would be highly insensitive. Instead, lawmakers have voted to pivot their full attention toward security oversight, strict governance, and legislative support for affected victims and their families.

“The decision of the state legislature was informed by the recent security challenges in the state and the need to show solidarity with affected areas and residents… Members resolved to focus attention on governance, legislative responsibilities and efforts geared towards addressing the security situation.”

— Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly

A 3-Year Legislative Performance Review

Rather than hosting public galas, the Assembly utilized the anniversary timeline to transparently reflect on its institutional performance over the last three legislative years. Speaker Ogundoyin provided a breakdown of the 10th Assembly’s productivity metrics:

  • Bills Enacted: A total of 36 bills have been successfully passed into law, spanning cross-cutting sectors of regional development, infrastructure, and state governance.
  • Resolutions Transmitted: The House passed 276 resolutions, all of which have been officially forwarded to the executive arm and relevant parastatals for active implementation.
  • Post-Legislative Scrutiny (PLS): The House’s specialized PLS unit conducted deep-dive compliance inquiries into existing security frameworks, most notably reviewing the execution of the Oyo State Security Agency Law and the Open Rearing and Grazing Regulation Law.

The Assembly’s decision follows heavy public pressure and mounting outcries from socio-political organizations over the recent kidnapping of school children and teachers in the state. The House previously held an extraordinary security summit and remains firm on its stance rejecting any form of financial negotiation or ransom payments to bandits, urging security operatives instead to launch aggressive tactical sweeps to safely retrieve all citizens currently held in captivity.
