The Saudi Pro League (SPL) has officially announced the conclusion of Michael Emenalo’s contractual term as Chief Football Executive, effective July 2026. The former Super Eagles defender, who joined the league in July 2023 as its inaugural director of football, leaves after completing his three-year agreement.
During his tenure, Emenalo was instrumental in the rapid transformation and global expansion of the Saudi top flight. He spearheaded the league’s “Player Acquisition Centre of Excellence” (PACE) programme, a strategic initiative designed to refine recruitment processes, attract younger international talent, and reduce the league’s average age. His work focused on building a sustainable football ecosystem, applying international governance standards, and professionalizing the administrative and commercial operations of SPL clubs.
Reflecting on his departure, Emenalo expressed pride in the foundation he helped build, noting that the league’s ambitious growth was a unique and audacious undertaking. While no official successor has been named, reports indicate that Emenalo is stepping down primarily to be closer to his family, with early speculation suggesting potential interest from European clubs regarding his next professional move. The SPL leadership has publicly thanked him for his expertise and dedication, wishing him success in his future endeavours as the league enters a new phase of its strategic development.
