The Nigerian Federal Government is finalized to receive a second batch of 270 Nigerian returnees from South Africa on Wednesday, following a wave of xenophobic attacks targeting foreigners in the country. This upcoming evacuation follows the successful repatriation of the first batch of 187 Nigerians who arrived via an Air Peace flight last week. The Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, confirmed that a total of 640 Nigerians registered to return home voluntarily after receiving support from the government and private sector initiatives. Security and logistics teams have been deployed to the cargo terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos to ensure a smooth reception process for the arrivals. Returning citizens will receive SIM cards with airtime and transport stipends to facilitate their reintegration and travel back to their respective home states. The Federal Government continues to engage in high-level diplomatic talks with South African authorities to secure the lives and property of those remaining behind. National emergency management agencies are on high alert to provide immediate medical screening, trauma counseling, and profiling upon arrival.
