SWAN Calls On Fubara To Reorganise State Sports Clubs, Appoint Substantive Sports Commissioner

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has called on Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara to prioritise the restructuring of state-owned sports clubs and appoint a substantive Commissioner for Sports to reposition the sector for sustainable growth and improved performance. The association stressed that effective leadership and proper administrative reforms are essential to revitalising sports development in the state, noting that well-managed sports institutions can nurture young talents, improve athletes’ welfare, and restore the competitiveness of Rivers State in national sporting competitions. SWAN urged the state government to strengthen institutional frameworks, provide adequate funding, upgrade sporting facilities, and implement policies that encourage grassroots sports development while ensuring transparency and accountability in sports administration. The association also highlighted the need to create an enabling environment that attracts private sector investment, corporate sponsorship, and strategic partnerships capable of driving long-term development across various sporting disciplines. According to SWAN, appointing a substantive Commissioner for Sports would provide the leadership needed to coordinate programmes, formulate policies, and oversee reforms aimed at repositioning the state’s sports ecosystem. The body expressed confidence that decisive action by the governor would boost athletes’ morale, improve administrative efficiency, and restore public confidence in the management of sports institutions. Stakeholders believe that sustained investment in sports infrastructure, talent development, and sound governance will help Rivers State reclaim its status as one of Nigeria’s leading sporting hubs while creating opportunities for youth empowerment and economic growth through sports.
