Popular Nigerian rapper and songwriter Olanrewaju Ogunmefun, famously known as Vector Tha Viper, has sparked intense online conversation after challenging deeply entrenched cultural mindsets surrounding traditional marriage practices. Speaking during a widely shared appearance on the MENtality podcast, co-hosted by Ebuka Obi-Uchendu and Banky W, the “Early Momo” crooner tackled the concept of bride price, asserting that making the traditional marital payment does not translate to ownership over a woman.
Vector argued that many men enter marriages with a toxic “buyer’s mentality” due to the financial transactions involved in traditional rites, which heavily skews the power dynamic and leads to the commodification and mistreatment of wives. According to the veteran lyricist, a bride price is traditionally intended to be a symbolic token of honor and a formal alliance between two families—not a receipt for an acquisition.
“Paying a bride price is a beautiful cultural tradition meant to respect the family that raised your partner. It is not an invoice,” Vector explained during the podcast. “Some men think because they paid money or brought items, they have bought a person. No, you don’t own her. She is your partner, not your property.”
The rapper, who tied the knot with his wife, Yinka Coker, in an intimate civil ceremony in December 2022, also used the platform to dismantle widespread societal stereotypes regarding where men should look for life partners. He surprised the hosts by revealing that he actually met his wife at a nightclub—a venue traditionally frowned upon by conservative African matchmakers.
Despite the negative stereotypes often associated with women who frequent clubs, Vector proudly described his wife as “super homely” and a phenomenal mother to their daughter. He urged single men to stop letting rigid, generalized societal rules dictate their approach to love, encouraging them instead to look past surface-level locations and focus entirely on individual character and personal compatibility.
