The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has stated that Nigeria’s economy is now expanding at a pace faster than the country’s population growth, describing the development as a positive indicator for long-term national prosperity if supported by consistent reforms and sound economic management. Speaking on the state of the economy, Sanusi noted that sustained economic growth above the population growth rate could improve living standards, increase productivity, and create more opportunities for investment, employment, and wealth creation. He emphasized that while the progress is encouraging, continued efforts are needed to strengthen key sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, technology, education, healthcare, and infrastructure to ensure that economic gains translate into meaningful improvements in the lives of ordinary Nigerians. The former Central Bank governor also stressed the importance of fiscal discipline, policy consistency, private sector development, and investment-friendly reforms that encourage both local and foreign investors. Economic analysts observed that growth figures alone may not fully reflect citizens’ living conditions, noting that inclusive growth, job creation, inflation control, and equitable income distribution remain critical indicators of sustainable development. They added that maintaining macroeconomic stability, improving productivity, expanding exports, and supporting small and medium-sized enterprises would help consolidate economic gains over the long term.
