A Lagos politician, Funso Doherty, has urged residents of the state to prioritise competence, integrity, and accountability when casting their votes in the 2027 general elections, encouraging citizens to make independent decisions based on their conscience rather than political pressure or personal interests. Speaking during a public engagement, Doherty stressed that elections provide an important opportunity for Nigerians to shape the country’s future by choosing leaders with the vision, character, and capacity to address pressing national and state challenges. He called on voters to carefully evaluate candidates based on their track records, policy proposals, commitment to public service, and ability to deliver meaningful development rather than relying solely on party affiliations or campaign promises. According to him, credible leadership remains essential to improving governance, strengthening public institutions, promoting economic growth, expanding employment opportunities, improving education and healthcare, and addressing security concerns. Doherty also encouraged greater civic participation, urging eligible citizens to register, collect their Permanent Voter Cards, and participate peacefully in the electoral process. Political analysts noted that calls for issue-based voting have become increasingly common as political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 elections. They observed that strengthening democratic institutions depends not only on political leaders but also on active citizen participation, voter education, and transparent electoral processes. Civil society organisations have similarly continued to encourage Nigerians to reject vote buying, violence, and misinformation while supporting free, fair, and credible elections. Stakeholders believe informed voting and responsible political engagement are critical to improving governance and promoting sustainable national development. As preparations for future elections continue, Doherty reiterated that every vote carries significant value and urged Lagos residents to remain committed to democratic principles by electing leaders who will serve the public interest with honesty, accountability, and dedication.
