The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has called for a uniform consumer protection framework as more Nigerian states establish independent electricity markets under the ongoing power sector reforms. The commission said harmonised consumer protection standards are necessary to ensure that electricity users across the country enjoy consistent rights, fair treatment, and effective dispute resolution regardless of the state in which they reside. According to the FCCPC, the decentralisation of electricity regulation presents new opportunities for improved service delivery, greater investment, and increased competition, but it also requires coordinated oversight to prevent inconsistent regulatory practices that could disadvantage consumers. The commission emphasised that electricity customers should continue to benefit from transparent billing, fair pricing mechanisms, reliable complaint resolution systems, quality service standards, and protection from unfair business practices as the market evolves. It urged state regulators, electricity distribution companies, and other stakeholders to work together in developing policies that prioritise consumer welfare while encouraging private sector participation and long-term investment. Energy experts observed that the gradual opening of state electricity markets could strengthen power generation, distribution efficiency, and infrastructure development if supported by clear regulations and investor confidence. They noted that consistent consumer protection measures would enhance public trust in the reformed electricity sector while reducing regulatory uncertainty for market participants. Industry stakeholders also stressed the importance of collaboration between federal and state institutions to ensure seamless implementation of the Electricity Act and related reforms. They added that effective regulation, transparency, accountability, and continuous stakeholder engagement will be essential to achieving a competitive and sustainable electricity market capable of meeting Nigeria’s growing energy needs. The FCCPC reaffirmed its commitment to protecting consumer rights while supporting reforms that promote innovation, competition, improved service delivery, and broader access to reliable electricity across the country.
