The International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) has warned that the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence is increasingly being exploited by cybercriminals, as victims in Nigeria and several other countries reportedly suffered losses estimated at $484 million through various forms of cybercrime. According to INTERPOL, cyber attackers are now using AI-powered tools to create more convincing phishing emails, fake websites, voice cloning, deepfake videos, and sophisticated online fraud schemes capable of deceiving individuals, businesses, and financial institutions. The organisation noted that artificial intelligence has made cyberattacks faster, more targeted, and more difficult to detect, increasing the risks faced by internet users worldwide. Security experts explained that criminals are leveraging AI to automate fraudulent activities, bypass traditional security measures, and personalise attacks using publicly available personal information. INTERPOL urged governments, financial institutions, technology companies, and law enforcement agencies to strengthen international cooperation, intelligence sharing, and cybersecurity capabilities to combat the growing threat. The organisation also advised individuals to remain vigilant by verifying suspicious messages, avoiding unknown links, enabling multi-factor authentication, regularly updating passwords, and using trusted cybersecurity software to protect personal and financial information. Cybersecurity analysts stressed that digital awareness and continuous public education remain critical in reducing online fraud and identity theft. They added that businesses should invest in advanced cybersecurity systems, employee training, and incident response plans to minimise exposure to evolving cyber threats.
