A university Vice Chancellor has called on the Federal Government to develop a comprehensive national policy on artificial intelligence (AI) alongside a robust ethical framework to guide the responsible development, deployment, and regulation of emerging technologies across Nigeria. Speaking at an academic forum, the Vice Chancellor said artificial intelligence is transforming education, healthcare, agriculture, finance, manufacturing, security, and public administration, making it essential for Nigeria to establish clear policies that encourage innovation while protecting public interest. According to the academic leader, a well-defined national AI strategy would provide direction for research, investment, talent development, data governance, and collaboration between government, universities, technology companies, and the private sector. He stressed that ethical standards should address critical issues such as data privacy, transparency, accountability, algorithmic bias, cybersecurity, and the responsible use of AI in decision-making processes. The Vice Chancellor also urged educational institutions to expand digital literacy programmes, strengthen research capacity, and equip students with practical skills needed to thrive in an AI-driven economy. Technology experts welcomed the recommendation, noting that countries investing in artificial intelligence governance are better positioned to attract innovation, foreign investment, and high-value employment opportunities. They observed that responsible AI regulation can help build public confidence while encouraging businesses to adopt advanced technologies safely and efficiently. Industry stakeholders further emphasised the importance of supporting local innovation through funding, research partnerships, startup development, and improved digital infrastructure. They added that a balanced policy framework should promote technological advancement without stifling creativity or entrepreneurship. Analysts believe Nigeria has significant potential to become a leading technology hub in Africa if investments in education, digital infrastructure, and innovation are matched with forward-looking policies and effective regulation. The call for a national AI policy reflects growing recognition that artificial intelligence will play a central role in shaping economic growth, public service delivery, and global competitiveness in the years ahead.
