The global Nigerian community has yet another phenomenal literary milestone to celebrate! Young Nigerian-American poet Daniel Somtochukwu Umemezie has officially been named the 2026–2027 U.S. National Youth Poet Laureate.
Selected from a massive pool of talented young writers and local laureates from across the United States, Umemezie claims the prestigious 10th national title. Even more inspiring, he follows proudly in the footsteps of fellow trailblazer Salome Agbaroji, who became the first Nigerian-American to win the honor in 2023.
Originally from Nigeria before moving to the U.S., eighteen-year-old Umemezie uses his striking verses to explore heritage, memory, cultural identity, and the intricate realities of growing up navigating two distinct worlds. His evocative poetry brilliantly captures everything from the hum of neighborhood generators back home to the poetic tension of diasporic life.
Reflecting on his vision for his tenure, Umemezie stated his desire to champion works that refuse to compromise—spotlighting multilingual writing, diasporic expression, and poetry as a form of political and personal insistence.
Having recently graduated from high school, the multi-talented young creative—who is also skilled in music and visual arts—plans to study aerospace engineering while carrying out his national literary duties. From local poetry competitions in Iowa to the grand national stage previously held by icons like Amanda Gorman, Daniel Umemezie is proving that young immigrant voices are reshaping the heart of American literature.
