NiHSA Warns of High Riverine Flood Risk in Kaduna, Niger and Other States Within Seven Days

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, NiHSA, has warned that high riverine flooding could affect Kaduna, Niger and several other states within a seven-day period as rising river levels increase the risk of flooding in vulnerable communities. The agency’s warning is based on hydrological monitoring and forecasts indicating that communities located along river channels and floodplains should prepare for possible flooding and take precautionary measures. Recent NiHSA advisories have identified several states facing elevated flood risks as water levels at monitoring stations rise during the peak rainy season. The agency has urged residents in vulnerable locations to remain alert and follow early warnings issued by relevant authorities. Flooding can threaten homes, roads, farms, schools, health facilities, markets and other public infrastructure, particularly in communities located close to rivers and low-lying areas. The risk also highlights the importance of early evacuation where authorities determine that remaining in exposed communities could endanger lives. NiHSA has encouraged state and local emergency management authorities to strengthen preparedness and coordinate responses in areas identified as vulnerable. Residents are also advised to avoid crossing flooded roads or waterways and to keep drainage channels free from waste and other obstructions. Nigeria’s 2026 Annual Flood Outlook has identified thousands of communities across several states and the Federal Capital Territory as being at risk of flooding during the rainy season. The latest warning underscores the importance of acting on flood forecasts before water levels become critical. Communities can reduce potential losses by securing important documents, protecting valuables, identifying safer locations and paying attention to official emergency instructions. NiHSA continues to monitor river levels and provide flood alerts to support preparedness and disaster response. As rainfall continues, residents in flood-prone areas are encouraged to take the warnings seriously and remain prepared for changing conditions.
