Former Zambian minister Mutotwe Kafwaya was killed during a security operation at a property linked to opposition politician Brian Mundubile in Lusaka, according to police. The incident occurred shortly after Zambia’s presidential election and has heightened political tensions in the country. Police said the joint security task force encountered gunfire and resistance from unidentified individuals during the raid, prompting officers to return fire. One man was fatally wounded and a firearm was reportedly recovered. Kafwaya was later identified by members of his family. Authorities said the operation resulted in the arrest of 11 people and alleged that the political alliance associated with Mundubile was connected to insurgency and militia activities. Mundubile has rejected the allegations, describing them as fabrications, while also saying he had not been informed about Kafwaya’s condition or whereabouts after the former minister was shot. Kafwaya, 49, previously served as a member of parliament and held ministerial positions, including Minister of Works and Supply and Minister of Transport and Communications under former President Edgar Lungu. He later remained in opposition politics after Lungu lost power in 2021. The security raid has attracted attention because it took place amid heightened political tensions following the presidential election. President Hakainde Hichilema was declared the winner, while Mundubile has indicated plans to challenge the result, citing alleged irregularities. International observers have also raised concerns about aspects of the electoral process and the heavy security presence at some locations. The circumstances surrounding Kafwaya’s death are expected to face further scrutiny as calls grow for transparency and due process. The incident has renewed concerns about political tensions and security operations in Zambia following the election. Authorities are expected to provide further information as investigations continue.
