An extraordinary chapter of living history has drawn to a close in Western Nigeria, following the death of Alagba, the legendary 420-year-old palace tortoise of the ancient Oyo Kingdom.
Alagba, whose name translates from Yoruba to “The Elder,” had long stood as a revered symbol of endurance, royal heritage, and deep cultural tradition within the palace of the Alaafin of Oyo.
