Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, has landed a strategic new appointment aimed at fostering national unity, declaring that religious institutions hold the key to ensuring peaceful, credible, and violence-free general elections in 2027.
Accepting his appointment as Patron of the National Inter-Faith Peace and Harmony Council in Abuja, the Speaker highlighted the profound influence that Christian and Islamic leaders command across Nigeria’s diverse grassroots. Abbas stressed that as political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 ballot, faith-based organizations must actively preach tolerance, reject hate speech, and counter partisan manipulation that threatens public order.
The Speaker noted that elections should serve as a celebration of democratic choice rather than a trigger for communal conflict or ethnic division. He urged religious leaders to leverage their pulpits and altars to mentor the youth against political thuggery, disinformation, and election-related violence, reminding them that sustainable national development is impossible without enduring peace.
Pledging the full legislative support of the 10th House of Representatives, Abbas assured the council that lawmakers will continue to craft policies and support initiatives that promote inter-faith dialogue, religious harmony, and civic responsibility nationwide. Representatives from both major faiths commended the Speaker’s commitment to peacebuilding, pledging to work collaboratively across all geopolitical zones to prepare citizens for a peaceful transition.
