In a star-studded celebration of local brilliance and athletic excellence, the Ondo State Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) officially honoured 50 prominent sports personalities, administrators, and key institutions at the prestigious “Ondo 50 Sports Icons Award” in Akure.
Organized to coincide with the landmark 50th anniversary of Ondo State’s creation, the historic ceremony recognized legendary icons who placed the Sunshine State on the global sports map. Honourees included former Governor Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, former NPFL Chairman Gbenga Elegbeleye, former AFCON champion Godfrey Oboabona, Super Falcons star Rasheedat Ajibade, international midfielder Joe Aribo, and world-class wrestler Odunayo Adekuoroye. Institutional pioneers such as OSRC Media Group, FUTA, and AAUA were also celebrated for shaping the state’s rich sporting heritage.
However, the event was more than just glitz and award plaques. Ondo SWAN Chairman, Segun Giwa, used the platform to issue an urgent call to action, demanding immediate state government intervention in upgrading dilapidated sports facilities across all local councils. Giwa stressed that while past legends conquered global arenas through sheer willpower and personal sacrifice, sustaining future success requires modern infrastructure, world-class coaching, comprehensive medical support, and structured grassroots competitions.
Representing Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Chief Press Secretary Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan reaffirmed the administration’s readiness to partner with SWAN to revitalize grassroots sports and upgrade critical infrastructure. With stakeholders demanding swift execution, all eyes are now on the state government to turn these promised sports investments into reality.
