Former Kogi State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Tom Ohikere, has forcefully demanded an unconditional power rotation to Kogi West, while rejecting the planned government-backed Kogi Unity and Power Rotation Summit.
Speaking on behalf of the Coalition for Better Kogi State, Ohikere—an Ebira leader from Kogi Central—insisted that his firm stance is rooted in uncompromising fairness and natural justice rather than ethnic sentiment. Breaking down the state’s governance history since its creation in 1991, the former commissioner pointed out that Kogi East held the governorship for 17 years, while Kogi Central will have completed 12 years by the end of the current dispensation. Meanwhile, Kogi West stands at a shocking zero years. Ohikere declared that his conscience could never defend a “17-12-0” political formula, stressing that zoning the governorship to Kogi West is imperative for long-term political balance, unity, and equity.
Firing a direct broadside at the state administration, Ohikere completely rejected the government-sponsored rotation summit, dismissing it as a calculated ploy by serving political appointees to hijack and derail genuine rotation talks. He argued that cabinet members currently benefiting from the existing power structure lack the moral neutrality to moderate a debate on equity, stating plainly that beneficiaries cannot act as referees over political fairness. Confirming a total boycott, Ohikere announced that opposition stakeholders and citizens will instead convene an independent “Kogi Equity, Unity and Rotation National Summit” in Abuja to draft a binding Charter of Equity.
