Political tension in Kebbi State has reached a boiling point as National Assembly lawmakers and the Executive Committee (EXCO) of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have jointly demanded an immediate, comprehensive investigation into the alleged illegal arrest and detention of their party members and supporters.
Leading the charge, the Kebbi Caucus of the ADC in the National Assembly, alongside State Chairman Safiyanu Bala, submitted formal petitions to the Police Service Commission (PSC) and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP). The party leadership accused security agencies of being weaponized by political opponents to intimidate opposition voices and suppress peaceful political activities across the state.
Speaking on behalf of the lawmakers, Senator Garba Maidoki acknowledged the constitutional duty of law enforcement to investigate suspected offenses, but firmly cautioned that political affiliation must never serve as a pretext for unlawful deprivation of liberty. He urged security authorities to uphold constitutional due process and respect fundamental human rights, warning that abusing state institutions damages public trust and weakens democracy.
In response, state officials and APC representatives dismissed the allegations, maintaining that law enforcement actions are strictly driven by legal mandates rather than political victimisation. Nevertheless, civil rights groups and opposition stakeholders are keeping a close watch on the developments, calling for absolute transparency to ensure rule of law prevails.
